US Ultra Runner Arrested in India for Carrying Satellite Communicator
Runner’s Shocking Arrest in Goa
A US-based ultra runner, Tina Lewis, recently shared a shocking travel experience in India. She was detained for carrying a Garmin InReach device, a popular satellite communicator often used by hikers and trail runners for safety in remote areas. Lewis, originally from Canada but residing in Colorado, revealed on Instagram that she had been using the device throughout her 2.5-month journey in India without any problems—until she reached Goa in early December.
The Legal Issue: 1933 Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act
Indian authorities cited the 1933 Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, which prohibits possessing wireless telegraphy equipment without a license. Lewis expressed her surprise, stating, “I was not aware a GPS device was illegal.” She endured hours of questioning and several days in court before being released and cleared of all charges.
Travel Challenges and Reflections
Despite the ordeal, Lewis decided to continue her journey through India, hoping to end her trip on a positive note. Now traveling through Kerala, she wrote, “I’m not sure I will feel the same way about the country as I did before, but I’m willing to leave with better experiences and memorable stories.”
Lewis also reported that at least two other foreign tourists, including an American and a Czech cyclist, faced similar arrests for carrying Garmin devices.
