Iran Lifts Ban on WhatsApp and Google Play, Reports State Media
Iran Takes First Steps Toward Relaxing Internet Censorship
Iran has eased restrictions on two major platforms, WhatsApp and Google Play, marking an initial step toward reducing its strict internet controls, according to Iranian state media.
Internet Restrictions in Iran
Iran is known for its stringent internet regulations, which include blocking access to several U.S.-based social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Despite these restrictions, many tech-savvy Iranians bypass these blocks by using virtual private networks (VPNs).
Decision to Unblock Platforms
The state news agency, IRNA, reported that the decision to lift the ban was made during a meeting led by President Masoud Pezeshkian. The meeting resulted in a “positive majority vote” to allow access to popular foreign platforms such as WhatsApp and Google Play.
Official Statements
“This is the first step in easing internet restrictions,” stated Sattar Hashemi, Iran’s Minister of Information and Communications Technology, during the announcement. This development signals a shift in the country’s long-standing internet policies.
Role of Social Media in Protests
Social media platforms have played a critical role in recent anti-government protests in Iran. These platforms often serve as tools for organizing and sharing information despite government censorship.
International Context
In September, the United States urged major technology companies to assist users in heavily censored countries, including Iran, to access online platforms freely.
